Getting married

I’m honoured to say that I am marrying the lovely lady you can see on the right of this blog. She has the combination of integrity, kindness, selflessness, intellect and sheer femininity I have been seeking all my life, and thought it impossible to find (in the end I only had to travel 5,000 miles), so while I did not take this decision lightly, it ultimately was not a difficult one for me.
Marriage is not “just a piece of paper”, as naysayers protest. It is a bold and open affirmation that you love and intend to remain with the other person. It is a compliment which should be paid to them, quite apart from the legal and familial benefits. It’s a big decision, of course, but where “co-habiting” is mere agnosticism, marriage is full-on life-affirming humanism. It is devotion to another, humility in oneself and a deliberate investment in quality, not quantity.
I asked the question at Fawsley Hall where we had a magical night followed by fireworks. Andrea is keen on traditional practice, as am I, so such practice was followed to the letter!
We’re not sure where we will live. Some of that depends on work, but with values apparently disintegrating around us in London, the idea of a place in the English countryside and another in Florida is very attractive to us. So now, I move on to the next phase of life, and that feels good.
