Lennon & McCartney

John Lennon
I have just been listening to Lennon: The Wenner Tapes on Radio 4 - a very interesting interview with John Lennon. During the interview he refers to himself as a genius, but not even in an egotistical way, just aware of the fact of the matter.
I have often contemplated how easy it is to prove that Lennon was the creative force behind the Beatles and McCartney was, mainly, just a PR man. It is perfectly obvious. When Lennon wrote and recorded his own songs - in the short time available to him - he produced the likes of Jealous Guy and Imagine. McCartney goes solo (under force - he didn’t want the Beatles to split - I wonder why) and there has not been a single comparable piece of music from him right up until now. Oh, I forgot about The Pipes of Peace and The Frog’s Chorus… not.
Lennon speaks so honestly in this interview it is great listening, and what a great man. This is not a case of the Emperor’s New Clothes of the art world because this man really did, of course, have some serious talent. It must have been embarrassing for McCartney, because he must have secretly known the state of affairs. Somewhat convenient for him, and so tragic for everybody else, that psychopath Mark Chapman robbed the world, and so sadly, Yoko Ono, of this gifted artist.
